Shipping Lines will stop accepting plastic scrap shipments to Hong Kong!

The major shipping lines in the USA are going to stop accepting plastic scrap shipments to Hong Kong in order to comply with the new Environmental pollution and solid waste law in China.  China has adopted and passed “Law on the Prevention and Control of Environmental Pollution by Solid Wastes” which will go into effect September 1, 2020.

At this time, we know of 4 major shipping lines that have stopped making plastic scrap shipments, or intend to stop making plastic scrap shipments to Hong Kong in order to comply with the new law.

  • MSC – June 1, 2020
  • Cosco – September 1, 2020
  • Hapag Lloyd – September 1, 2020
  • Maresk – September 1, 2020

Under the new law it appears that the Chinese Government will no longer allow plastic scrap and mixed color plastic pellets to be imported into Hong Kong.  Mainland China currently allows off grade plastic pellets that are uniform pellets, uniform color, uniform packages and uniform labels to be imported into the country.  The new law was passed in order to bring Hong Kong in line with the same rules that regulate the shipment of virgin plastic resin into China.
