I have just gotten back from a week in China, so I thought I would let you know what I saw in regards to business during my travels.  The Chinese economy is slowing down significantly, but mainly because export sales to the USA and Europe are off at this time.  China will see 6-7% growth in 2008, but that is down 50% from its 15% annual growth from 2000-2009.  Most of the businesses that I visited said that their business was off by 40-50%.  Most buyers anticipate that material prices will move down in June and July, so they do not want to place any orders in the month of June.  Most of the Asian traders are in panic mode, and are just trying to sell off their inventory before material prices go down further.  This panic selling is not helping when trying to secure export sales orders, because no customer wants to lose money on August deliveries, for resin that they purchased in June.  The price of Nylon 6 is softening weekly due to the price of Caprolactam falling significantly over the past 60 days.  Now the price of PA66 regrind is being challenged by the lower prime PA6 prices.  Caprolactam is selling this week in the spot market in Asia below $2200/MT, which should translate into prime PA6 fiber chips selling around $1.06-1.08/lb. CIF the Port Asia.

The Asian housing market has been correcting since the beginning of 2012, with home sales prices falling in most major cities.  China’s housing market is somewhat like ours in the USA, some areas of town see their prices stay flat or increase, while other parts of town see significantly lower home sale prices.  Don’t’ get me wrong, most houses in China have a lower sale price, but not all.  The Chinese car market is starting to normalize after 9 strong years of sales.  The private ownership of cars in China just started in 2003. Their initial car sales boom has come to an end, and the market is starting to develop into a more normal supply and demand driven market.

In order to stimulate the economy the Chinese central government is starting to initiate some domestic stimulus programs to support the continued growth of the country’s infrastructure.  They will continue to expand their rail and highways systems into the Western part of the country, and build more subways in the big cities.  The government will lower the interest rates for loans from the central Bank of China, and lower the cash reserve rate to free up more money for lending.  But what company needs a cheap loan if you don’t have any orders on hand, so you can run the factory?

We think that China will remain slow through the end of 2012, or until we see some real increase in product demand out of the USA and Europe.  We feel that business will be very slow in June and July 2012, and material prices should bottom out sometime in July.

The price Caprolactam (CPL) in the Asian market reached a new low of $2420/MT at the end of week, with the CPL price once again falling after hovering most of the week in the $2500/MT range.  I am not going to predict where the price of Caprolactam is going, but the market conditions do not support any price increases for the material in the near future.  China has new CPL capacity coming on line in 2012, and the Taiwanese have delayed starting their new CPL plant due to weak demand in Asia.  The overall economy in China is slowing down, and the local businesses and people are starting to feel the pinch of their slowing domestic market.  Even though China will experience some growth in the domestic market in 2012, their overall economy still depends on exports to the USA and Europe to keep it rolling ahead at its robust pace.  Unfortunately the economic environment in the EU is shaky at best, and has little hope of recovering before the end of the year.  The US economy seems to have stabilized, and now our businesses are learning to adjust and remain profitable at the current sales levels.  The US economy will start back on a slow path of growth and recovery, as we continue to get the great recession even further behind us.  It will not be easy and it will not be fast, but better times will come after the 2012 Presidential election.  Expect to see the CPL price stay soft over the next 60-90 days due to weak demand from China.  I feel the Chinese will probably come back into the CPL market and make some large purchases in the next 30-60 days, and then slow their CPL buying down for the remainder of the year.  Unfortunately by the end of July 2012 China will have large volumes of CPL in inventory, and probably have enough material on hand to make Nylon 6 pellets through the end of the year.

I have seen no real change in the Nylon 66 (PA 66) market over the past 2-3 weeks.  The off grade Nylon 66 market seems to be pretty stable at this time.  Although we feel the price of off-grade PA66 needs to soften to stimulate some export orders, the domestic producers are holding firm on the material prices.  The PA66 market is a more balanced market with supply and demand then the PA 6 is today, with the sale of both prime and off-grade PA 66 in balance at today’s production levels.  Meaning the producers are currently selling all of the scrap they produce at acceptable margins without any problem.

Based on what I am hearing in Houston, the domestic olefins market will continue to see softer material prices over the next 30-60 days.  Both the price of PE / PP has softened over the past 30 days, and will go into June with more price decreases coming our way.  The Asian olefins export market has been terrible for the first half of 2012, with no relief for a swift recovery in sight.  The producers have worked through most of their seasonal plant turnarounds, and have no good excuses to take down more olefin production capacity.  The public warehouses in both China and the USA are full of packaged PE / PP resins, with not enough demand from manufacturing to bring down the current inventory levels.  Buy what material you need to keep running, and expect to see resin prices soften further during June and July.

The price Caprolactam (CPL) in the China market reached a new low of $2480/MT in late April before coming up slightly to over $2500/MT in early May 2012. The big question is, will the producers be able to stabilizer CPL prices at the current level, or can we expect additional price softening as we move into the summer months? I think the later will be true, as business is still sluggish in both the USA and China, and there is additional new CPL capacity coming on line in China in 2012. For more than a year now, prime PA6 prices have been historically high, with the material selling at price levels that are almost the same as PA66 prime pellets. The price of CPL in Asia has softened over the past several months, and will probably soften a little more before reaching bottom. I am sure that the domestic polymer producers want to keep the price up for price PA6 pellets in the USA, but the Asian market is now at about $3000/MT ($1.36/lb.) for the same pellet. Now is the time to push the domestic PA6 producers for some price relief on material. Asian sales are slow, and feedstock prices are down.

The off grade Nylon 66 market seems to be pretty stable at this time. Although we feel the price of off-grade PA66 needs to soften to stimulate some export orders, the domestic producers are holding firm on the material prices. The PA66 market is a more balanced market with supply and demand then the PA 6 is today, with the sale both prime and offgrade PA66 in balance at today’s production levels. Meaning the producers are currently selling all of the scrap they produce at acceptable margins without any problem.

Get ready for some major olefin price adjustments in May or June. Both PE and PP prices should be softening in the near future. The packaging warehouses in Houston are full of inventory, and most exporters haven’t written a good PE or PP export order in 5-6 months by now. The public warehouse that we used in Houston mainly exported PE / PP materials for Formosa Plastics, and they closed last month because business is so slow. Don’t get me wrong, there is still some PE / PP materials exporting to India and Brazil, but not near at the levels needed to keep the USA olefins market in balance. The summer months of June and July are just around the corner, so get ready for prices to correct due to slow demand and plentiful inventory in the warehouse.

The delivered price of Caprolactam (CPL) in China seems to have reached a plateau this week, with the price remaining around $2400/MT delivered. This should allow for prime Nylon 6 (PA6) pellets to be selling in the $2500-$2500 ($1.15-1.16/lb.) price range for large volume export orders. China is very slow at this time, and they are not placing the usual large volume year end orders in order to load up on inventory before the Chinese New Year (CNY). Some of the Chinese factories are so slow at this time that they have begun sending the employees home for the CNY already in mid-December. I think plastic material prices in Asia will stay flat through the end of the year, and maybe even soften again in early 2012 if demand for product does not pickup soon. As we know, the whole world is struggling with a sluggish economy, so some plastic material prices may see further softening before it is all over.

The Nylon 66 (PA66) market continues to be somewhat sluggish in December 2011 as well, with material prices having stabilized at their current level. We have seen PA 66 wide-spec pellets and regrind prices plateau over the past 15 days, with most of the domestic suppliers continuing to be sold out of both Nylon 66 wide-spec pellets and PA66 regrinds. The PA66 market has less room for price softening than the PA6 market, so prices will stay at their current level, and then move up as soon as the economy starts to recover. The one thing that will help keep PA 66 prices down will be continued soft PA6 prices in the global market due to the large volume of CPL capacity coming on line in Asia in 2012.
